Opening and announcement of the direction of driving the university towards Social Impact Education as “CMU Accelerate Impact and Hackathon 2023”

Chiang Mai University (CMU), in moving towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs), has set the direction of the key implementation with the strategic objectives to demonstrate the aspect of being a leading university towards sustainable development, by delivering value to the inclusive society at both national and international levels

 

Therefore, CMU has collaborated with Thai Social Value Association          (SV Thailand) which is a world-class organization embracing experts in social return on investment (SROI) under the Social Value International network with members of over 700 organizations in 60 countries. Both parties have launched Social Value Accelerator (SVA) program to accelerate the development of Social Impact standards, group of experts as well as integration practices and guidelines for assessing and managing economic, social, and environmental performance. Not only in the university level, but also in the network partners level to expand the Social Value principles and standard that will change the way we accounting for value, to integrate social value data into decision-making, planning, implementation, and allocation of budgets with this new methodology and social return on investment (SROI) analysis to accelerating social values for all types of entities in all sectors.

SVA is a collaborative framework between Social Value Thailand and a network of alliances with a common commitment and intention to jointly push forward SDGs Impact Acceleration in 3 dimensions, as follows:

1. To enhance the development of standards, experts, implementation systems, and
guidelines for evaluating and managing economic, social, and environmental achievements, by promoting the involvement of stakeholders towards social value ambition

2. To advocate from the policy development level to the operational level in the implementation process of relevant entities and participants to reflect value and social returns, which leads to management planning and development to improve the direction and operational plan of the entity (Impact Measurement, Management & Maximization)

3. To strike the balance among the economic, social, and environmental returns, as
well as to drive cooperation among network members and social entities in order to jointly develop relevant issues in various fields, leading to cooperation in achieving the SDGs Partnership for the Goals

The collaboration between CMU and Social Value Thailand to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience of each party will create the development of cooperation to raise the level of policy drive, the promotion of personnel development, the support of information system, academic media and technology, knowledge and network partners. There will be joint efforts to support and facilitate economic and social impact assessment activities, seminars, discussions or meetings, including joint development in various academic programs to promote and support such cooperative issues both locally and globally.


The strategic implementation covers 4 key issues, as follows:

    1. Social Value Professional Development: to develop professionalism and knowledge in managing and monitoring social outcomes, certification for social valuation assessors and instructors according to the international Social Value Principle, Impact Management Project, and SDGs Impact Standard

2. Assurance Standard: to promote credibility, and to certify the SROI Report

3. Academic Forum & Partnership: to promote the works regarding development, dissemination, and research, including related academic works both at national and international levels

4. Impact Data: to promote the development of data management systems on social achievements interconnectedly, so as to achieve learning curve and accelerate the results extensively

Chiang Mai University (CMU), the first leading university to jointly SVA endeavor the integration of SVA enterprise-wide to reflect the impact on the society, in line with the policy and strategy of CMU’s  13th Education Development Plan, aiming for sustainable development via SDGs. CMU supports new forms of education, drives the utilization of technology to develop various implementations to become a university of innovation models for the community and to jointly enhance the society in a sustainable manner.

 

During July 1 – July 2, we held the public event CMU Accelerate Impact and Hackathon 2023 to bring SROI into practice, to exchange viewpoints on “From guidelines to practice” at the local, academic and industrial levels full of diversity. Moreover, there are also various forums at the international level, local level and operational level. Significantly, the collaboration between Chiang Mai University and Thai Social Value Association has also been signed and announced in the form of memorandum of understanding (MOU). Furthermore, the CMU Social Value Recognition Awards 2023 presentation ceremony has also been organized to recognize the projects under CMU’s 12th Education Development Plan, which have created impact on the society, in line with CMU’s impact dimensions, as follows:

 

Strategic focus 1: Energy & environment (EE) innovation, consisting of the project on surveillance and warning of smoke & fog (smog) problems by using the DustBoy air quality sensor system in Thailand, the project to assess energy efficiency and energy management potential via smart energy, and the project called CMU Smart Surveillance (Gate and CCTV)

 

Strategic focus 2:  Food and Health Innovation and care for the elderly (Food & Health Asia: FHA), consisting of the project on Strengthening Hypertension Management Program in Primary Care in Thailand, the project to enhance technology, add value, and expand research studies in food and health using an end-to-end food innovation plant model for commercial use, including the projects to support, develop, and move forward the alternative agriculture and food crops to benefit local communities

Strategic focus 3:  Creative Lanna (CL), consisting of the “Creative Lanna League” project to develop innovative business entrepreneurs, the project on Lanna Traditional House Museum which houses creative living, learning source and Lanna way of life, including project on Creative Lanna Music Innovation Development

Strategic focus 4: Academic service for society, consisting of the project on participatory English teaching process by integrating local wisdom with case studies of teachers and community leaders in Mae Tuen sub-district, Omkoi district, Chiang Mai province, the project to strengthen community leaders in Nakian sub-district, Omkoi district, Chiang Mai province, including the project to analyze the impact of laws on reducing obstacles in doing business
